16 - Are Naturopathic Principles Aligned With You?
Hi, I’m Kath from Kathleenerob.com, and today I want to explore something that might help you decide whether seeing a naturopath feels right for you — is naturopathic philosophy aligned with your values and approach to health?
There’s quite a bit of misinformation out there about what naturopathy actually is, and honestly, sometimes even I feel put off when I see how it’s portrayed. So, I wanted to share what clinical naturopaths are really about — what we do, how we think, and the principles that guide the way we care for our clients.
The Core Principles of Naturopathy
There are a few foundational principles that guide our practice. These principles shape how we approach your health concerns and how we work with you as a whole person.
1. First, Do No Harm
Of course, no health professional intends to do harm — that’s a universal rule. But in naturopathy, this principle has a few extra layers.
When I’m prescribing something for you, I’m always thinking about how it interacts with what you’re already taking. I check for potential interactions with medications or supplements and discuss any possible side effects or risks, even if they’re minimal.
Doing no harm also means considering emotional and financial wellbeing.
I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable discussing your health without being re-traumatised or overwhelmed. I’ll never pry unnecessarily — only ask what’s relevant to supporting you.
And because natural treatments and supplements in Australia aren’t subsidised, I’ll always consider your budget and do my best to work within what’s possible for you financially.
2. The Healing Power of Nature
This is a classic naturopathic concept — and one of my favourites.
It refers not only to the natural nutrients, herbs, and foods that sustain us, but also to our body’s innate ability to heal and return to balance (what’s called homeostasis).
As naturopaths, we look at where your body might be out of balance and how to support it back to equilibrium — rather than simply suppressing symptoms.
Our goal is to help your body course-correct and restore its natural harmony.
3. Find and Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms
When someone’s unwell or in pain, of course we want to relieve that discomfort. But beyond symptom relief, I’m always asking:
Why is this happening? What’s driving it?
I don’t just look for a “green” version of symptom suppression — I explore your biochemistry, nutrition, lifestyle, mental health, and environment to identify root causes and the upstream imbalances contributing to your condition.
It’s about addressing the deeper patterns, not just putting a natural band-aid on symptoms.
4. The Naturopath as Teacher
In Australia, we don’t use the term “doctor,” but this principle — Docere in Latin — means “the teacher.”
I don’t see my role as simply listening and handing you a prescription.
I see it as a partnership. You’re the CEO of your own body, and I’m your consultant — here to share information, guidance, and options so you can make informed decisions.
My appointments often run long because I want you to understand why I recommend certain tests, what your results mean, and how each part of your plan supports your goals.
It’s not a one-way street either — I learn from you too. You have lived experience with your body that no textbook can replace. Together, we collaborate so you leave feeling empowered and informed.
5. Treat the Whole Person
You’re not just a collection of symptoms — you’re a whole human being.
If you come to me with high cholesterol, I’m not just thinking about lowering that number. I’m asking:
How is your thyroid or digestion affecting this?
How does stress play a role?
What’s happening with your overall cardiometabolic health?
And beyond the physical, I consider your personality, pace, and capacity. Some clients love an intensive, all-in approach, while others feel overwhelmed and need to start small. Both are valid, and my job is to meet you where you are.
6. Education and Prevention
Finally, naturopathy is about education and prevention — helping you understand your body and make choices that prevent future issues.
That might mean preventing current conditions from worsening, or identifying risks early based on your genetics, family history, or lifestyle.
It’s proactive care — not just reactive.
In Summary
The principles that guide naturopathic practice are:
First, do no harm
The healing power of nature
Find and treat the cause, not just the symptoms
The naturopath as teacher
Treat the whole person
Education and prevention
These values are at the heart of how I work with clients — holistically, collaboratively, and respectfully.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Does this philosophy resonate with you? Has it been your experience with your own healthcare practitioners — naturopathic or otherwise?
Drop a comment and share your perspective — I’d love to connect.
Until next time,
Kath
